Thursday, February 08, 2007  New Host!!! Update bookmarks!

Today I was told by a guy from a spanish forum that my downloads weren't working and could I please upload ESL somewhere for him (which I did).

After investigating the problem, it seems that some files have become corrupt on the old host, whereby I can't even delete them to replace them with the backup ones!

At that stage I decided to start looking for a new host for the site, since the old one with it's weird tech problems, huge-ass banner ads, multiple pop-ups and null download ability/zip support finally drove me over the edge.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I've moved everything to a new host and it's possible you may come across an error or two over the next week or so while navigating around the site. If you do, please let me know where and what so I can fix it.

This change should be completely transparent for the end user, provided you are using http://firstgen.no-ip.com to access the site (if you're not then you need to update your bookmarks/favorites)

Friday, June 16, 2006  DoomPAL update

Got quite a bit done with DoomPAL:
- killed a few bugs (thanks to Liberation for reporting some of them)
- re-implemented the "Package it!" feature and tweaked it a bit with more explanations and the option to edit the readme.txt
- modified the code to take into account the original order of the wadlist as read in from the user config file, since some ports(EDGE) can be affected if you load wads in the wrong order.

So, initial release will have all the same features ESL did including the "Package it!" feature except for multilingual support: for the moment DoomPAL will only be available in English.

I still need to tidy up the source code a bit, since there's still a bit of a mix of VB6 code in there which I want to rewrite to 2005, and it wouldn't hurt to sprinkle some comments throughout the code too

I'll probably release a private beta to some people over the next day or two and see how that goes, then do a public beta. The source will be released as soon as I get to first public release(stable).

Thursday, February 16, 2006  ESL is dead: Long live DoomPAL!

Since the final release of ESL v2.24 several months ago, absolutely no changes have been necessary to the program (i.e. all bugs have been fixed) and I'm quite pleased with the current functionality (no new features are planned).

So where am I going with all this? Well, ESL has been discontinued since it has gotten to the stage where I want it to be. Now I'm just gonna leave it alone and move on.

However, this does not mean the death of ESL!
"What the hell is he rambling about?" I hear you say.
ESL is no more, but from it's ashes shall rise a new launcher, which will have all the same functionality as the actual ESL, but with a new look, new name and new codebase.

My idea is to do a new launcher from the ground up, but this time for the .Net platform. This new launcher will incorporate most of the same features from ESL (at least on the outside: inside will be another story) and will hopefully have a much cleaner source code which I plan on making public later on.
